FULL DISCLOSURE: I received this product for free or at a reduced price in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
I will have to admit, that at first when I was asked to review the I-Auto Time Kitchen & Outdoor Knife Sharpener, I was thinking it was a bit of a stretch with me being a beer blog. However the more I got to thinking about it the more the product made total sense. Beer in it's very essence is cooking and so much of beer culture revolves around food pairings. Throw in the fact that I am a big time knife geek and I was excited to try this product. Whether it is chopping vegetables to make a chili, filleting fish or chopping up some London broil, sharp knives are always a necessity in this beer lover's kitchen.
The sharpener shipped from Amazon very quickly after ordering it and I was a bit shocked at first at the size of the box. Figuring the box was full of packaging, I was wrong again when a substantial piece of equipment appeared. Solid, strong and with solid rubber base material, it did not have the issue of sliding around like my current sharpener has.
As you can see by the pictures it is not only much bigger than my current sharpener, but also bigger than the knife I started with. This sharpener also features three grooves for sharpening ceramic knives, a coarse setting for regular knife sharpening and a fine setting for honing. Clearly a ceramic knife purchase is in my near future.
So I know this sharpener feels great, looks good and is substantially larger than my other sharpener, but how does it do in the true test? To start, I grabbed my old Buck fishing knife that I have had forever. This knife has been through everything and as you can see in the first picture below it had some dings in the edge. While the sharpening process is pretty idiot-proof having nice clear instructions helpful. Following the instructions, I ran it through the coarse setting about 6 times to knock down the burrs and dings on the cutting edge. The next step was another six swipes through the fine setting to hone the edge to its final state. As you can see by the before and after, the sharpener took all the dings out and left it with a shiny clean cutting edge. A few cuts into a slice of paper further confirmed this knife was kitchen ready and super sharp.
At less than ten bucks, the price is right to add this to your kitchen.
