Wicked Weed Pernicious IPA
Our first beer hails from the craft beer mecca of Asheville North Carolina. Asheville is a craft beer destination and home to Wicked Weed Brewing. Wicked Weed is no stranger to Beer Up and also recently expanded its distribution into Massachusetts as the word has spread about Wicked Weed's dedication to craft beers. The Pernicious IPA is their flagship beer, which recently won a silver medal at this year’s Great American Beer Festival. A West Coast style IPA , this beer boasts 96 rating on BeerAdvocate .
Alewerks Bitter Valentine
From historic Williamsburg Virginia, our next brewer Alewerks is a Virginia heavyweight and the underdog in this contest. Alewerks' Bitter Valentine is also described as having Pacific Northwest hops and is listed as a double IPA. Despite less publicity, it also boasts a similar rating on BeerAdvocate with a 93, clearly putting this one in the upper echelon of beers.
Head to Head Comparison
The Bitter Valentine poured more orange and thick into the glass. Heavy, hazy and cloudy, this beer looked more like a New England style IPA. This beer was sweeter in its malt presence with a caramel background and light bitterness. The hops give it more of a mango quality and a little more of a lingering finish with some pine notes. At 8.3% ABV it is comparable in strength to the Pernicious IPA but sweeter and funkier in a good way.
